Parian Porcelain and Integrated Ceramic Transfer with Anne Butler

The workshop will focus on the pattern in the porcelain, introduce the participants to how Anne Butler constructs thin sheets of Parian porcelain and her techniques, and explore how Parian porcelain can be used in order to create thin layers, often with an integrated design that becomes highly translucent and mobile when fired. The workshop will also focus on the process that Anne uses to integrate the pattern into the porcelain and also will introduce participants to some of the construction techniques she uses.

No previous experience with porcelain is needed, and the workshop is suitable for beginners and for more advanced ceramic artists. At the end of the workshop, the participants will have successfully completed some porcelain vessels or sculptural pieces.

Anne Butler trained in ceramics at the University of Ulster and the University of Wales in Cardiff and works from her studio in Northern Ireland. There is much reminiscent of archaeology, geology, and architecture in her porcelain sculptures which explore relationships between process, material, and the passage of time. Her working method is intrinsically connected to the act of making and the endless experimentation with the changing state of Parian porcelain. A broad palette of techniques, which include casting, hand-building, and sculpting, are continually being challenged and developed to contrast the precision of industrial techniques and geometric structure with the fallibility of the handmade. The sculptures are fired multiple times and explore concepts associated with Parians marble-like quality when solid, its gravity and stratification when layered, and its satin-like translucency when thin.
